Dr. Hisayoshi Ito

Experimental Study on Atomization Characteristics of Energetic Ionic Liquid for Green Monopropellant of RCS Thruster

Dr. Hisayoshi Ito conducted an experimental investigation to develop a cutting-edge eco-friendly green propellant.
In his investigation, HAN (Hydroxyl ammonium nitrate) and ADN (Ammonium dinitramide) were focused as the base materials for the green alternative of the hydrazine-based propellant for spacecraft RCS (Reaction control system). To understand the atomization characteristics of the green propellant, basic physical properties including viscosity and surface tension of three candidate materials, HAN-based SHP163, ADN-based AMU631, and AMU442 were measured. The injection experiment was conducted under the RCS operating condition. The results of these experiments revealed the relationship between the fluid flow characteristics and the physical characteristics of the green propellant candidates.
Considering the importance of those findings for further green propellant development, his work will contribute to future space development activity. Therefore, Dr. Ito deserves the Japan Explosive Society Encouragement Award.
