Reaction analysis of ammonium dinitramide/2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium nitrate mixture
Dr. Kento Shiota elucidated the mechanism of thermal decomposition of a mixture of ammonium dinitramide (ADN) and 2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium nitrate (HEHN) using thermal analysis techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), gas analysis methods including mass spectrometry (MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (IR), and composition analysis of the liquid phase by attenuated total reflection (ATR)-IR.
In particular, ATR-IR analysis revealed the formation of monoethanolamine nitrate (MEAN) from the pyrolysis of HEHN, indicating that the reaction of MEAN with NO2 radicals in the liquid phase was responsible for the rapid exothermic reaction.
ADN is currently under investigation as a potential component of ionic liquid propellants and is anticipated to contribute to the development of easily manageable propellants for thrusters. The methodology employed by Dr. Kento Shiota, which involves elucidating the reaction mechanism through the appropriate combination of thermal analysis of energetic materials with other analytical techniques, is considered essential for future space exploration.
The findings of this research are highly regarded, and the study has made a significant contribution to the Japan Explosives Society, meriting the Japan Explosives Society Technical Award.
