Abstract

The ignition properties of boron/potassium nitrate (B / KNO3) have been investigated using a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. The ignition delay time and surface temperature of a B / KNO3 sample were measured. The effects of the purity of boron and the particle size of potassium nitrate on the ignition delay time are discussed in the paper. In addition, a theoretical model was presented to investigate the ignition behavior of B / KNO3. A one-dimensional heat equation with an Arrhenius type chemical reaction source was solved using a physical splitting technique. The surface temperature history of the sample was calculated and compared with that of experiments.
