Abstract

Black powder composed of particles of potassium nitrate, carbon, and sulfur. There is no binder to cover particles like composite propellants. There are some gaps and these gaps may be to affect the burning rate. The burning rate increased with increasing volume of gap in black powder. The object of this study was obtained the burning mechanism of black powder. Sulfur in the black powder increased the reaction rate and increased the temperature gradient near the burning surface. Adding H2O to black powder, the burning rate increased. The reaction rate in gas phase with H2O increases.
